ATF LABORATORY METHOD FOR DETERMINING CALORIE, CARBOHYDRATE AND PROTEIN CONTENT IN MALT BEVERAGES

Brewers, Importers, Wholesale Malt Beverage Dealers and Others Concerned.

PURPOSE. This circular is issued to inform you of the method used by the Bureau in determining the calorie, carbohydrate and protein content in malt beverages.

ANALYTICAL METHOD: The ATF laboratory utilizes the American Society of Brewing Chemists - Association of Official Analytical Chemists method as set forth in the Journal of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, Vol. 62, No. 2, pp. 367-368. This method was initiated and sponsored by the ASBC, and subsequently adopted, by the AOAC. Subsequently, it has been used by ATF and the brewing industry as the basis for the ATF labeling information requirements set forth in Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Ruling 80-3.
