Greetings! This week’s top news includes a reminder to be sure to use the correct address when mailing excise tax returns and payment to avoid potential penalties and interest, we’ve added 5 new grape varieties to the list of names granted administrative approval for use on American wine, we’ve recently updated the Federal Firearms and Ammunition Excise Tax Return, and the U.S. Codex Office will be holding a public meeting in March in advance of the next meeting of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues.

When filing your TTB excise tax returns and payments by mail, please be sure to use the correct address.  Late returns or payment are subject to penalties and interest.

Please DO NOT mail returns or payments to the National Revenue Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

NEW GRAPE VARIETIES APPROVED FOR DESIGNATING AMERICAN WINE

We recently granted administrative approval for the use of the following new grape variety names on American wine labels:

• Cabernet Dorsa
• Crimson Pearl
• Prieto Picudo
• Ruche
• Xarel•lo

Wine bottlers may use grape variety names granted administrative approval to label American wines, pending the results of our next rulemaking to revise the list of approved grape variety names (27 CFR 4.91).

FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION EXCISE TAX (FAET) RETURN FORM HAS BEEN UPDATED

On February 8, 2019, we published an updated version of the Federal Firearms and Ammunition Quarterly Excise Tax Return (TTB F 5300.26). The updated FAET Return clarifies certain data fields and form instructions to help taxpayers make accurate returns and allow TTB to better verify a taxpayer’s liability without the need to request additional information.

FAET taxpayers should use the new FAET Return for the first quarterly tax period of 2019 (January 1 through March 31, with returns due April 30, 2019).

The new FAET Return is available for electronic filing through Pay.gov, as well as in fillable pdf format.

CODEX ALIMENTARIUS COMMISSION: MEETING OF THE CODEX COMMITTEE ON PESTICIDE RESIDUES

Currently the Codex Alimentarius Commission has 189 Codex Members including the United States. The Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues is responsible for establishing Codex Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for pesticide residues in specific food items or in groups of food (including the raw materials used in the production of alcohol beverages) or feed that move in international trade.

ACTION: Notice of public meeting and request for comments.

SUMMARY: The U.S. Codex Office is sponsoring a public meeting on March 7, 2019. The objective of the public meeting is to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft United States (U.S.) positions to be discussed at the 51st Session of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, in Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China, April 8 - 13, 2019. The U.S. Manager for Codex Alimentarius and the Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs recognize the importance of providing interested parties the opportunity to obtain background information on the 51st Session of the CCPR and to address items on the agenda.

DATES: The public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. EST.
