IN THIS ISSUE Greetings! We wish all of our subscribers a very enjoyable Labor Day weekend. This week’s top news includes 5 grape varieties that received administrative approval for use on American wine labels, the establishment of the Royal Slope AVA, some improvements we’ve made to COLAs Online and Formulas Online, an announcement about how to comment on 19 of TTB’s forms and other information collection instruments, and an system outage notice for TTBOnline applications. NEW GRAPE VARIETY NAMES APPROVED FOR DESIGNATING AMERICAN WINEWe recently granted administrative approval for the use of the following grape variety names as type designations on American wine labels:
Wine bottlers may use these names, as well as other names granted administrative approval, to label American wines pending the results of our next rulemaking to revise the list found in 27 CFR 4.91 of grape variety names approved for use in designating American wines. Visit our American Grape Variety Names page at TTB.gov for additional information about the regulation of grape variety names. ROYAL SLOPE AVA ESTABLISHEDOn September 2, 2020, we published T.D. TTB-162 in the Federal Register to establish the approximately 156,389-acre Royal Slope American viticultural area (AVA) in Grant and Adams Counties, in Washington State. The final rule is effective on October 2, 2020. The Royal Slope viticultural area is located entirely within the established Columbia Valley viticultural area. To view the location and boundaries use our AVA Map Explorer. We are issuing this regulation in response to a petition submitted by a local wine industry member on behalf of local vineyard owners and vintners. TTB designates viticultural areas to allow vintners to better describe the origin of their wines and to allow consumers to better identify wines they may purchase. See Docket No. TTB-2019-0008 on Regulations.gov for all documents and public comments related to this rulemaking.
