TWO AMERICAN VITICULTURAL AREAS PROPOSED

On Thursday, July 15, 2021, we published proposals to establish the Paulsell Valley and Rocky Reach grape growing regions as American viticultural areas (AVAs).  We’re issuing these proposals in response to petitions submitted on behalf of local vineyard owners and vintners.  We designate viticultural areas to allow wineries to better describe the origin of their wines and to allow consumers to better identify wines they may purchase.

We are accepting comments on each of these proposed AVAs through September 13, 2021.

Paulsell Valley: This proposed AVA is approximately 34,155 acres and is located in Stanislaus County, California.  View Docket No. TTB–2021–0005 to see all the documents related to this proposal and to submit a comment.

Rocky Reach: This proposed 50-square mile AVA is sited in portions of Chelan and Douglas Counties in the state of Washington.  It is located wholly within the established Columbia Valley AVA.  See Docket No. TTB–2021–0006 for all documents related to this proposed AVA and to submit a comment.

LOMANTO GRAPE VARIETY APPROVED FOR USE ON AMERICAN WINE LABELS

We recently granted administrative approval for the use of the grape variety Lomanto as a type designation on American wine labels.

As long as they meet all requirements for using a grape varietal name, wine bottlers may now use Lomanto, as well as other names granted administrative approval, as the type designation on American wine labels pending the results of our next rulemaking to revise the list of grape variety names approved for use in designating American wines found in 27 CFR 4.91.

Check out our Anatomy of a Wine Label Tool for additional information about wine labels.
