Permits Online: Preview the New Applications Wizard

Note: This page contains instructions and screenshots so you can see what to expect when using Permits Online, our online method of applying for a TTB permit, registration, or notice.

The New Applications Wizard guides you by asking a series of questions, and depending on your answers creates an application package, which is a list of the applications you're required to submit.  Everyone who applies for a new TTB permit, registration, or notice must complete the questions in the New Application Wizard.

Note: not all questions shown in the screen prints below will appear when you fill out your application. Some questions appear based on the answers you select.

To access the New Applications Wizard, sign into your Permits Online account and select "Apply for New Permits, Registrations, or Notices."

You will need to read and accept the Rules and Responibilities by marking the box.  Select the "Continue" button

Step 1: Determine applications

Step 1 of the New Application Wizard asks you a few pertinent questions so we can determine what applications you need to complete in order to begin operating a TTB-regulated business.  Based on how you answer the questions, the wizard builds an application package and walks you through completing those applications.  The information collected in the wizard is automatically copied into your applications, so you won't have enter it again later on.

Application Contact

The contact information shown is for the person who is logged in to Permits Online.  This is who TTB will contact if we have questions about the application.  If this information is incorrect, you must update it under Accounts Management, which can be found at the top if each page in Permits Online.

Premises Address

Enter the address of the physical location where the TTB-regulated operation(s) will take place.

Commodity Selection and Application Type

From the commodity dropdown, select either "Alcohol," "Tobacco," or "Firearms and ammunition" as appropriate.  If you select "Alcohol" you'll have to further indicate what type of operations you intend to engage in.

In the Application Types section, the types of applications available to you will change based on your commodity selection.  Select all the appropriate application types you intend to conduct at the address supplied in the section above.  If you are unsure of which application type to select, review the help text by selecting the

blue question mark.

Business Entity Information

Next, you'll need to supply some basic information about your business entity, for example, how you are organized, your EIN, etc.  You'll also have to answer how the required Personnel Questionnaires will be submitted, or if they are already on file with TTB.  See Personnel Questionnaires for more information.

Confirm

Before you continue, review the answers you gave in the previous sections.  Once you select "Continue" you won't be able to change your answers, since the wizard is using those answers to build your application package.

Step 2: Review

In step 2 you'll again see the information you provided in step 1.  But in this case, you cannot go back to step 1 and edit any of your answers.  If you spot an error while reviewing step 2, you'll have to start a new wizard by returning to the Home page and selecting "Apply for New Permits, Registrations, or Notices."

Step 3: Application package

Your custom application package is presented in step 3 of the wizard.  It is built based on how you answered the questions in step 1 of the wizard.  If you are applying for the first time your, package will always have an Application for Original Entity, which gathers information about the business entity or sole proprietor that will be operating the TTB-regulated business.  You'll also see a commodity operations application for each permit type you'll need, again, based on how you answered the questions in step 1.  Lastly, depending on how you answered the question regarding how the required Personnel Questionnaires (PQs) will be submitted, you'll see the number of PQs you requested.

We recommend that you complete the applications in the following order:

  1. Personnel Questionnaire(s) (if any).  Start with the PQs, regardless of whether you indicated you would complete them within the application package or if they will be completed separately, outside of the application package.  This is especially true for PQs submitted by others or by you outside of the application package, because you'll need the PQ tracking numbers when you complete the Application for Original Entity.
  2. Application for Original Entity (if any).
  3. Application(s) for "Commodity" Operations.

Submit Application Package

Once all the applications in your package are in the "Ready to submit (edit)" status you may select the "Submit Application Package" button, which is the final step in submitting your applications to TTB.  You'll receive an email confirmation with your application tracking numbers.

After submitting the application package you will no longer be able to make any changes to the information you submitted.
